The Power of Naming

I have been reading a lot in recent days about Universities that are considering renaming some campus buildings. Renaming processes are exploring how to respond when the names on buildings evoke a racist past. I have also been thinking about the power of the “say their names” movement. The powerful and prophetic roll call of disremembered black and brown bodies calls for public action. This post reflects on the power of names and naming in general as a step toward action. Eve Ensler speaks about the power of naming things on an NPR podcast. She says that “language has the capacity to transform our cells, rearrange our learned patterns of behavior redirect our thinking.” Names and naming are powerful human acts.
